Behind the Scenes of “a desert dreamscape”, A One of a Kind Mural Commision
This summer I had the pleasure to meet some new friends living in my neighborhood. I wasn’t aware that they had lived where they do for longer than I’ve been alive, and also watched me and my siblings grow up at my house. I finally had the chance to stop and get to know them better and they had mentioned how they loved looking at my backyard freewall paintings that change frequently. I was even more humbled when they asked me to paint a permanent piece in their home.
The concept I came up with had to represent this couple who loved Nevada and its beautiful landscape, but also represented my style and how I like to paint. A desert dreamscape was crafted from my mind that depicted openness, togetherness, and serenity.
I couldn’t have predicted the best part of this project though which was the intimacy of painting inside of someone’s home. I felt a connection and a personal responsibility to not drop the ball and give them something that they would love for years to come. They fed me dinner every night as we got to know each other more, I hung out with their family who were fascinated by the painting process, and using brushes helped slow me down to really enjoy the calmness of where I was working.
As always I’m grateful to paint another mural, but this one stands out as one of my favorite experiences I’ve had on any of my previous projects. Thank you for being so dope.
