“Campus Freestyle” Alma Mater
Behind the Scenes of a “Campus Freestyle”, A Mural Painting at The University of Nevada Reno
Fear of Failure. Hopes of Success. Imaginary scenarios we make up in our heads. Of who we think we are and what other people are thinking of us. Not present, but living rent free inside our own heads. I’ve been trying to find out who I am for a long time now. It’s so easy to get lost in the sauce and suddenly your life is so different from what it was months ago. Trying to accept yourself as who you really are is fucking hard. Everyone you know perceives you differently from the next. So why am I trying to be a different person to everyone I meet just to gain their approval? I’m done with that shit and this painting pushed me in the direction I’m trying to go.
Painting big ass projects like these are a game of chess. Every move you make has to be timed correctly and with intention or you’re never gonna get to checkmate your wall. Naturally, things almost never go exactly as planned, but if you can push through the first 75%, the next 25% smells like fresh aerosol and sounds like a summer party in the streets of Barcelona. From start to finish, I had to ride that wave and shift with the tide, but what I didn’t change was the confidence in who I am or the hard work ethic that got me here.
Shit’s scary man. Getting on a big ass, wobbly ass lift at 9am, and scribbling on a wall that is very visible with high traffic. Am I gonna drop the ball in the fourth quarter and crumble under the pressure? Put an artwork into the world I’m not proud of? At a place I spent many years of my life dedicated to? Fake it till you make it? Fuck that. I’m going to have confidence in who I am and what I create, then let that carry me all the way home.
I don’t have enough thanks for all of my friends and family that hooked me up with this project, came and gave me support in the form of beer, snacks, and extra hands, and gave me the love and confidence to be who I’m gonna be.
Alma Mater.
Support from my Family and Friends for real makes this shit possible, I'm never alone. Thank you to everyone who came out to say hello, bring me snacks, or put paint on the wall; you make all the difference.
